John Going Answers Summons of Death After Long Illness
Following an illness that had confined him to his home during recent months, John Going, a life-long resident of this community, peacefully passed into the shadows of death on last Friday, August 17th. His death occurred at his home in this city. John Going was a native of Amador County where he was born at Jackson on January 1, 1862. He was a son of the last David and Margaret Going, pioneer residents of this county. For many years he was employed at the old Zeile mine where he was in charge of operation of the chlorination works. Later after his retirement from that work he became the sexton of St Patrick's church in this city, a place that he occupied until failing health prompted his retirement. During his lifetime in this community had had enjoyed the esteem of numerous friends. He was a charter member of Excelsior Parlor No. 31 of the Native sons of the Golden West, and had been prominent in the activites of that organization since June 28, 1884. He and Harry W. Jones of this city were the sole surviving charter members.
His home life had been a shrine of devotion that was broken by the death of his wife, the late Mary Ann Going, who preceded him in death on November 19l, 1944. A daughter, Mrs. Charles Lagomarsino, survives the death of her parents. Other relatives include three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Fraser and Mrs. Johanna Purcell, both of Sacramento and Miss Elizabeth Going of this city.
The funeral services were held on Monday morning being from the late residence on Pitt street, thence to St Patrick's Catholic church where mass was held for the repose of his soul. Father Kearney officiated at the service. A rosary was recited at the home on Sunday evening at eight o'clock.
The funeral was under the direction of J.J. Daneri and Son and interment occurred at the Jackson Catholic cemetery. The pall bearers were longtime friends and neighbors of the deceased, the group included James Fontenrose, John Gubbins, Walter Taylor, Earl Garbarini, John Huberty and John Smallfield
