MERLE MERRITT, 86, of 230 Pleasant St., Athens, died Friday, May 12, 2000, following an extended illness. Born April 2, 1914, in Granville Summit, he was a son of Mark and Bessie Kittle Merritt. Merle was a graduate of Troy High School, where he was an outstanding athlete. He played baseball with his brothers on the semi-pro Cowley team, managed by their father, Mark Merritt, in the 1930s. He was the proprietor of a grocery store in Sylvania, worked at Remington Rand in Elmira during World War II and the Troy Engine Machine Shop, and retired from Ingersoll rand, Athens, in 1979. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a life member of the B.P.O.E. 1148 of Sayre and a member of Loyal Order of the Moose No. 1490 of Waverly. He is survived by his wife of t3 years. Ruth ‘Foody" Frick Merritt, currently at the Bradford County Manor; his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Linda Merritt of Athens; a son Terry Merritt of Camp Hill, Pa.; his sisters, Mildred Slingerland of Troy, Ruth Steele of Sayre and Ellen Judson of Columbia Cross Roads; a brother, ed Merritt of Chattanooga, Tenn.; his grandchildren, Robin Miller of Waverly, N.Y., and Dean and Jamie Merritt of Athens; great-grandchildren, Rachael and Elizabeth Miller and Macey and Ashley Merritt; a sister-in-law, Annette Persall; and a brother-in-law, Adrian Weaver. He was predeceased by his parents; a son, Richard Merritt; his brothers, Miles Merritt, who was his twin brother, and James Merritt and rex Merritt; his sisters, Benita Becker and Dorna Patterson. There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Lowery Funeral Home, 225 S. Main St., Athens, with the Rev. Vincent Langan, pastor of St. John's Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens. Memorial donations may be made to the Seventh Floor I.C.U. at the Robert Packer Hospital, Guthrie Square, Sayre in his name. –Towanda Daily Review.
