Samuel was born in Sussex County, Maryland in the part that became Delaware. He married Isabel Jones about 1784. He and his family were part of a migration of family and neighbors that moved to Hancock County, GA about 1795. Before 1802 he and several others of the group were in Jackson County, GA.
Before 1820, Samuel and most of his children moved to Conecuh County, Alabama. He lived with his children until he died, in his late 80s, after 13 November 1840.
