Local Union Chief Abbott Dies In Wreak
Paul Payne Abbott, 47, of 2914 Platt Springs Road, West Columbia, was killed Saturday night in a two-car accident on U. S. 321 in Richland County.
Mr. Abbott's son and son-in-law were also killed in the wreak.
Mr. Abbott was born in Richland County, the son of the late George W. Abbott Sr. and Lenora Aughtry Abbott. He was a steamfitter with the W. O. Blackstone Co. and was president of Local 227 Plumbers and Steam Fitters Union.
He was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church, a veteran of the Marine Corps and was a coach for the Pony and Colt leagues for West Columbia and Cayce for 11 years.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Jimmie Campbell Abbott; a son, Paul "Rocky" Abbott; two daughters, Mrs. Lanora McCarty and Miss Judy Lynn Abbott of West Columbia; and three brothers; George W. Abbott Jr. and Ervin Abbott of Columbia and Roy Abbott of West Columbia.
Services will be today at 11 a.m. at St. Peters Catholic Church, conducted by Msgr. W. J. Croghan. Burial will be in Southland Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Keith Bristow, Claude Kyzer, Juluis Tinsley, Bubba Tinsley, Ernie Swygert, Don Hursey and Gene Nimons.
Rosary services were held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Thompson Funeral Home.
