Eli Alvin Franks was a Confederate Veteran. He enlisted in Company F of the 2nd Alabama Light Artillery, Robinson's Battalion, CSA in 1862. He signed up along with his brother Elijah S. Franks. When he left for the war, he left his wife, Matilda, with three small boys and another child on the way.

Company F was formed in January, 1862, at Mobile, Alabama. It was attached to the Department of the Gulf. In January, 1864, it was attached to the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. The unit was stationed at Mobile, Alabama, or nearby throughout the war. They participated in the conflicts at Fort Morgan, Fort Gaines, Spanish Fort, and Fort Blakely. On May 4, 1865, 64 officers and men of the 2nd surrendered to Union Forces, with Lieutenant Colonel James H. Hallonquist in command of the 2nd Battalion.
