Funeral Tuesday at 3:30 For Dr. Charles Messick

Funeral services for Dr. Charles Messick, 83, who died Saturday morning at his home, 1016 Fillmore, will be held Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Wall-Diffenderfer Mortuary. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Dr. Messick, a retired pioneer physician, was one of the early horse-and-buggy doctors, and took his early medical training in Louisville, Ky., School of Medicine. He was born March 31, 1866. He was located in the medical hospital in Chicago before coming to Kansas. He had been a registered physician for the last 60 years. He first located in Ellis to practice in Kansas. While there he married Miss Dora Anderson, who died in Topeka three years ago. Dr. and Mrs. Messick observed their golden wedding anniversary on New Year's day in 1941.

Dr. Messick practiced in Abilene for a number of years, coming to Topeka in 1905 for better educational advantages for their sons. He was known both in Abilene and Topeka in the early days for his interest in fine horses and buggies. He was one of the first owners of an automobile. He was associated for many years with the late Dr. Keith in what was known as the Keith Hospital at Sixth and Clay.
He maintained his uptown office on Kansas Avenue until his retirement. He was a member of the Shawnee Medical Society and of the First Christian Church.

He leaves two sons, Clarence and C. Arthur Messick, both of Topeka; and four grandchildren, Clarence Jr., Milton, Charles Jr. and Marjory Messick, all of Topeka.

Pallbearers for the service Tuesday will be H.S. Shimeall, Arthur Soderstrom, Paul Borsdorf, L.E. Becker, Michael P. Kuhn and Walter H. Gayhart.
