C.A. Messick, Teacher of Note, Dies Here Monday

Charles Arthur Messick, 59, of 1100 Tyler, a prominent educator, died Monday at his home after a lengthy illness. He was born at Wilson and came to Topeka in 1905 with his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Charles Messick.
Mr. Messick attended Topeka schools and received his B.S. degree at Emporia State Teachers college. He went to the University of Kansas for his masters degree and received his Ph. D. from the University of Chicago. In 1925 he became an honorary member of Sigma Xi, an honorary scientific society.

After teaching mathematics at various colleges over the nation for many years, Mr. Messick retired and returned to Topeka in 1945 to manage and operate several apartments. He had taught at the University of Florida, the University of Kansas, Lincoln Memorial university at Harrogate, Tenn., McKenzie college at McKenzie, Tenn., Oakland City college at Oakland City, Ind., and Park college at Parkville, Mo.

Mr. Messick was a member of the First Presbyterian church, where he was active in the choir. He was also a member of the Topeka Civic orchestra for ten years, where he played cello; he also held memberships in IOOF Lodge No. 1, Capitola Rebekah Lodge No. 219 and Royal Neighbors No. 148.

He leaves his wife, Mrs. Margaret Messick, and a daughter, Miss Marjory Messick, both of the home, and a son, Charles Arthur Messick Jr. of Emporia State college; two nephews , Clarence Roy Messick and Milton Lee Messick, both of 1117 Polk, and several cousins.

Funeral services will be at 3 pm Thursday at the First Presbyterian church; burial will be in the Mt. Hope cemetery.
