— MAYSVILLE, W.Va. — Ernest Cleo Self, 79, of Maysville, W.Va., passed away Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, W.Va.

He was born June 28, 1932, in Ketterman, W.Va., and was preceded by his parents, Olie and Annie (Kimble) Self. He was also preceded in death by one granddaughter, Kristen Leah Hooker; six brothers, Golden, Marvin, Venson, Jimmie, Raymond and Charles Self; and two sisters, Mary (Self) Borror and Verdie (Self) Kimble.

Cleo worked for the Glen L. Martin Aircraft Co. until 1960 and worked at Continental Can Co. (later brought by Crown, Cork and Seal) where he worked for 33 years as a Millwright mechanic. He served in the United States Army in Fort Jackson, S.C. and later in Fort Lewis, Wash.

In 1993, he and his wife built their retirement home in Maysville, W.Va., and moved back home. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Petersburg.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene Y. (Hipp) Self whom he married Sept 1, 1956. He is the father of two daughters, Ramona Yvonne Hooker and husband Kenneth, of Mesa, Ariz., and Bonita Jean (Self) Burrs and husband George, of Edgewood, one son, Douglas Allen Self, of Kingsville; five grandsons, Jason and Garrett Hooker, Joseph and Joshua Burrs and Eric Self; one granddaughter, Shelby Hooker; one great-granddaughter, Adde Hooker, one stepgreat-granddaughter, Coriannah Brey; and two sisters, Zula (Self) Alt, of Baltimore, and Aretta (Self) Helmick, of Winchester, Va.

Family will receive friends Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg, W.Va.

Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011, at 1 p.m. in the Schaeffer Funeral Home with Bishop J. Stephen Kimble officiating.

Interment will be in the Scherr-Idleman Cemetery at Scherr, W.Va., with military rites by the VFW Post 6454 and the WV Army Honor Guard.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or charity of choice
