Venson Easton "Whitey" Self, 85, of Romney, W.Va., formerly of Cumberland, died on Thursday, July 22, 2010, at Hampshire Long Term Care Center in Romney, W.Va.

Mr. Self was born on Nov. 9, 1924, in Smokehole, W.Va., a son of the late Olie and Anne May Kimble Self.

He worked for Kelly Springfield Tire Company in Cumberland, was a United States Navy veteran, having served during World War II, a member of Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, LaVale Vol. Fire Dept. and LaVale Rescue Squad, both in LaVale.

Mr. Self married Betty Robertson Self on Feb. 6, 1953, in Cumberland.

Surviving with his wife of 57 years are three sons, Michael Self, of Baltimore, Richard Self, of Romney, W.Va., and Brian Self, of Jonesville, N.C.; one daughter, Brenda Turner, of Annapolis; one brother, Ernest Cleo Self, of Petersburg, W.Va.; two sisters, Zula Alt, of Baltimore, and Aretta Helmick, of Winchester, Va.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Romney Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses in Romney, W.Va., on Saturday, July 24, 2010, at 3 p.m. with David Marino officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to service.
