VERONA LOSES A BELOVED WOMAN
Mrs. Calesta [sic] L. Suits dies in Syracuse Hospital
Was active in many ways
Belonged to Several Organizations and Was a Good Worker in All-A Loyal Neighbor and a True Friend Always-Born in Hastings, Oswego County, 63 Years Ago

Higginsville, Sept. 24- This place lost one of its most influential and active women when Mrs. Calista Loomis Suits, widow of Christopher Suits, died at 5:30 o'clock last evening in the Crouse-Irving Hospital, Syracuse. She had been there several weeks and death followed an operation. The remains were brought to the old Suits homestead today by Undertaker French of Oneida.
Mrs. Suits was born in Hastings, Oswego county, May 28, 1852, the daughter of William W. Loomis and Martha Burdick. She was married to Christopher Suits of this place in 1874. He died on March 31 last. She was well educated and before her marriage was a school teacher. Mrs. Suits was one of the most energetic and beloved women in this town. She was active in many organizations, was an enthusiastic advocate of woman suffrage and did a great amount of work in the Presbyterian Church of Verona, of which she was a member.
Mrs. Suits was a member of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union of Verona, had been secretary of the County W. C. T. U. since it was started, was secretary for years of the Verona Town Sunday School Association, was a member of Vesta Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, New London, and of King Solomon's Court, Order of Amaranth, Oneida, as well as being very active in Epworth League and church work generally.
She was the leader in many good movements. If money were needed for the church, or if there were to be a donation or other worthy project Mrs. Suits could always be relied on to lead the work and under her guidance it always was a success. She had an irresistible spirit for doing good. If a neighbor were sick it was a pleasure for her to sit up all night and care for the sick one. If trouble came to a home she was there to lend a helping hand. A loyal neighbor, a true friend, kind and charitable to all, Mrs. Suits's death is a severe loss to this town and its people.
One daughter, Mrs. Charles W. Angell, survives, living with her husband on the old homestead; also two brothers, W. W. Loomis of Higginsville and George A. Loomis of Vernon, and three sisters, Mrs. Lucia G. Stickney, Boston; Mrs. Nettie L. Cagwin, Sylvan Beach, and Mrs. Helen Hyland, Oneida.
The funeral will be held on Monday at 2 p. m. in the Higginsville Church and interment will be made in Grove cemetery.
