Mary Agnes Winston Goldsby, of Mobile, Alabama. Daughter of Governor John Anthony Winston, a first cousin of Confederate General Edmund Winston Pettus, for whom the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, was named.
Descended from a first cousin of Patrick Henry and also a cousin of Dolley Madison. Also a direct descendant of Cockacoeske, Queen of the Pamunkey tribe and a grand-niece of Pocahontas.

Winston-Goldsby home, 452 Government Street, Mobile, Alabama. In 1870, former Governor John Anthony Goldsby lived there along with his daughter Mrs. Agnes Goldsby and husband Thomas Jefferson Goldsby and family. Gov. Winston acquired the George Isbell plantation at Gainesville, Sumter County, which remained their country home after he moved to Mobile following his wife's death. His body was returned there for burial in the family cemetery.
T.J. Goldsby (6 June 1825-24 March 1889) was shown in the 1870 census living with his wife and father-in-law in the Winston home at 452 Government Street, Mobile, where Mrs. Goldsby was shown living, listed incorrectly as "widow" in the Mobile 1873 city directory.

Open house on New Year's Eve was a popular tradition celebrated in Mobile from the mid 19th Century to early 20th Century.
Several of the most prominent homes held receptions each New Year's Eve where a steady moving stream of guests were greeted throughout the evening. Visitors moved from one reception to the next, sharing a toast at each, with the goal of visiting all open houses or as many as possible for as long as one was able to stand. The selection of host houses usually rotated each year also.

Of interest in this article is the mention that Mrs. Agnes Winston Golsby was assisted in receiving in 1905 by Mrs. Charles John Torrey (Helen Dolly Dellet Gibbons) and her nieces Miss Mary Isbell Pillans (later Mrs. George Stark Gaines), Miss Laura Pillans, and their brother Palmer's wife Mrs. Emmie Danner Price Pillans.

Buried in the Winston Cemetery near Mary Winston Goldsby is James Bates Isbell, 2nd cousin of Charles J. Torrey's mother whose grandchildren were Palmer Pillans, Mary Isbell Pillans Gaines, and Laura Pillans. James Bates Isbell's wife was the daughter of his second cousin who was a first cousin of Charles J. Torrey's mother, the grandmother of Palmer Pillans, Mary Isbell Pillans Gaines and Laura Pillans.

Torrey, Mrs. Palmer Pillans, Misses Clara Ross, Hazel Pape, Emma and Elizabeth Rhett, Julia Lake, Mary (Isbell Pillans) and Laura Pillans, Annie Stewart, Carrie Dukes, Nan, Blanche and Sue Planck, Elizabeth Mendenhall, Miss Emily Upton of New Orleans and Miss Scott, of Claiborne, Ala. Miss Mary Easley Goldsby and Miss Etta Gaillard presided at the punch bowl."
