Malinda was the daughter of Thomas and Margaret Vint McQuain. Malinda was first married to James F. Keister on September 16, 1858 in Pendleton Co., VA. Malinda and James had two daughters; Frances and Mahulda Keister.

James F. Keister's military record shows in 1861 his age was 26 and he was assigned to the Twenty-fifth Virginia Infantry (Heck's Regiment). In 1863, Sixty-second Mounted Infantry (First Partisan Rangers, Sixty-second Partisan Rangers, Sixty-second Infantry, Sixty-second Cavalry, Imboden's Partisan Rangers). James died from wounds. His place of death was "ZZ, hhh," per military records. Does Anyone know what the code means?

Following James' death, Malinda married, Peter Hyre on May 12, 1864, in Pendleton Co., WV, by S. H. Griffith. Peter and Malinda had four daughters; Sally Hyre Leach, Virginia S. Hyre Hendricks, Nora B. Hyre Argenbright and Carrie Hyre Diehl.

Siblings of Malinda: Joannah McQuain, Martha J. McQuain married Joseph Propst, Mahulda McQuain married David Huston Radar, Minerva McQuain married John Franklin Radar, Morgan McQuain married Julia A. Rexrod, Eunice (Una) McQuain married John B. Waggoner.

Original headstone and footstone photographs provided by Malinda's granddaughter, Eva Mae Diehl Webber. Thank you to Kent Botkin for an updated photo.
