Harry Green was born Jan. 12, 1868, two miles southwest of Boulder on a ranch homesteaded by his father. They moved to Boulder in 1871 and to Marshall in 1880, where his father was Superintendent of the Coal mines until 1884.
While in Boulder, Harry went to school with Elmer Mallon. In 1883 Harry was learning the engineer'a trade at Marshall and the Mallons were running a livery barn at Boulder. The Mallons also herded cattle on the Rocky Flats between Marshall and Golden, and Harry used to go out weekends to stay at the cattle camp with the Mallon boys, Jim and Elmer....
In February 1904 he went to work for Linger at the Hardy Ranch. On September 11, 1906 he was married to Bessie Langholf Riggen. They stayed at the Hardy Ranch until the fall of 1910. That fall he bought the livery barn at Walden from Jake Timbrel.
The next year he was made mayor of Walden. Link Riddle had been drunk for a week, so Jake finally threw him in jail. There was no police magistrate so Harry had to try him. When Link was brought in he said, "Hello Hiram, how's all your folks?" "Very well thanks. Link you are charged with being drunk and disorderly. Guilty or not guilty?" "guilty as hell, Hiram." "Fifteen dollars and costs." He wrote a check for five dollars and said he could get the rest in fifteen minutes. He went to Slee's and bought a drink and gave a check for five dollars, did the same at Black's, and came back and paid his fine. Then they found he had just five dollars in the bank...
Harry Green has been elected three times for County Commissioner of Jackson County, in November of 1912, 1920, and 1928.
