ABBOTT, John Hubert Hubert Abbott passed away peacefully on July 17, 2015, at the age of 92. A native of Lithonia, Georgia, Hubert was the oldest of fourteen children born to John Grady and Ruth Lucille Houseworth Abbott. A child during the Great Depression, he began helping his family at the age of ten. In his teens, he participated in the building of Lake Tahoe infrastructure through the Civilian Conservation Corps. Just shy of his twentieth birthday, Hubert enlisted in the United States Navy and traveled the world. He was assigned to the USS LST Landing Ship 48 which was at Omaha Beach, Normandy, France on D-Day June 6th 1944. Hubert was in harm's way during many Naval assignments and was proud to have served his country. After his discharge from the Navy, he worked for the Civil Service. He married and raised his family in Lithonia where he was a member of First Baptist Church. Throughout his life, Hubert displayed the values of personal responsibility, duty, honor, sacrifice, humility, and faith so common to those of the "Greatest Generation". Hubert was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Dorothy Earlene Young Abbott, his sons, John Thanuel Abbott and David Paul Abbott and many of his brothers and sisters. He is survived by granddaughter, Keely Abbott Woodall and her husband, Woody Woodall; granddaughter, Polly Abbott Thatcher; great-grandchildren, Pete Woodall, Kendall Woodall, Luke Thatcher, and Lainey Thatcher; brother and sisters, Tom Abbott, Anita Mitchell, Joy Murphy, Ethel Lister, Alice Frix, and Sequel Hadaway; and daughters-in-law, Gay Abbott and Cindy Abbott. Hubert is also survived by a large and loving extended family. A funeral service will be held 3 o'clock, Thursday, July, 23 at First Baptist Church of Lithonia with Dr. Jim Martin officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the church. There will be a private interment attended by family following the service.
