John was born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, prior to his parents moving to New Brunswick, New Jersey.
He was drafted into the Marines 13 January 1966 from Newark, New Jersey.
LCpl Alfonso arrived in Vietnam in 1967, where he was assigned to Alpha Company, 3rd Motor Transporation Battalion, 3rd Marine Division. John died as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds and burns over his entire body. He was driving a truck when the convey was ambushed and a landmine was detonated, 17 kilometers southwest of the Hue Citadel, during Operation Cumberland. John and two Marines died during the ambush.
John was married and served his country for 1 year, 6 months and 6 days and was KIA #14,646.
Tour of duty date unknown.
He was 20 years, 9 months and 27 days old.
Survived by his wife; Elizabeth Alfonso and a son; John Jr Alfonso and his parents; Jose and Rose F Alfonso all of 118 French St, New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Alfonso was awarded the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal.
