James Montgomery Bell 1st married Mary Glenn in 1826 in South Carolina. In 1836, the family was living in Georgia, where children were born. After the death of his 1st wife Mary, he married 2nd Martha Elizabeth Puller, in 1843. She was born in 1821 in Carolina Co., Virginia.

According to a family history written by his granddaughter in the 1930's, James Montgomery Bell was living in Caldwell, Burleson Co., Texas. Family members (his daughter and others) were visiting from Gonzales County. James did not feel well and traveled back with the family. He died a few weeks later in Gonzales Co., TX.
