She married Sylvester Newton Thompson on January 28, 1872 at Sylvester's father's home in Birchdale Township, Todd County, Minnesota. Sylvester's father Rev. John L. & his stepmother Ellen Thompson were also the witnesses.
Mary & Sylvester had three children: Laura Estella, b. Aug 23, 1874; Fredrick Burtrum, b. Feb 2, 1877; Carrie Evelyn, b. Sept 7, 1881.
Mary died at age 42.
