Dayvault Hawkins KANNAPOLIS - Ila Ophelia Dayvault Hawkins, 97, formerly of Mabel Ave, Kannapolis died March 30 at Avante of Concord. The family will receive friends at Whitley's Funeral Home from 6 to 8 pm on Tuesday April 1. A "Celebration of Life" service will be held at 2 pm Wednesday at St. Johns United Church of Christ, Kannapolis. Burial will be at Carolina Memorial Park. She was born May 23, 1910 in Rowan County, daughter of the late John F. and Essie Lee Dancy Dayvault and granddaughter of the late Paul M. Dayvault, who sold his 72 acre farm to J.W. Cannon in 1906 to build Cannon Mills plant 1 in Kannapolis. Her father, John F. Dayvault drove the first stake to lay out the boundaries of the town of Kannapolis. Mrs. Hawkins retired from Cannon Mills after 44 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard L. Hawkins. She served the Lord as a faithful and active member of St. Johns United Church of Christ. Having no children of her own, she is survived by 5 nephew's and their families; Robert & Jill Ervin of Concord, John & Kathy Ervin of Concord, Don & Cathy Ervin of Kannapolis, Wayne & Ruth Dayvault of Newton and Steve Dayvault of Indiana. The many children in the family will greatly miss seeing their "GRANNY". A special thanks to all those folks, who over the year's, took the time to assist Mrs. Hawkins with her many needs.
