James was the second son of John Wilson and Janet Murdock and was born in 1779 in Coylton, Ayershire per his birth certificate. James spent his youth on the home farm and in 1806 or 1807 he married Jane Lusk. She was the daughter of Andrew Lusk and Margaret Kerr, and was the aunt of Sir Andrew Lusk, who was the Lord Mayor of London. Sir Andrew's father was Jane's brother John. James was an ideal man, vigorous, industrious, temperate and an intensive and generous Presbyterian. He is reported to have been a well-known singer of church music. The family was considered to be fairly prosperous. They lived most of their married lives on the Glessel farm near Pinmore and Kilpatrick. James and Jane had eleven children: Margaret Kerr, Jennat, John, Jean, Mary, West, Sarah, Chirstina, James, Grace and Andrew. James died of Erysepelas per his death certificate.
