Howard Ebel Killed In Tractor Accident

Bellwood. Jan. 30 Howard J. Ebel 33, was killed Friday afternoon in a tractor accident at his farm in this vicinity. The accident happened about 3:30 o'clock when the tractor. pulling a load of hay ran into a ditch. He fell between the tractor and load and was crushed under a wheel.

A son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry, Ebel, Sr. of Bellwood. He was born October 23. 1917 and had spent his entire life in Butler county. He received his education in rural schools and joined the army in March 1942. As a radar operator in an anti-aircraft gun battalion, he spent 39 months in the European theater. When discharged in October, 1945, he had rating of private first class.

Upon returning to civilian life he returned to his occupation as a farmer. His marriage to Miss Mary Homan took place in Presentation church January 13, 1940. A daughter, Janet Marie born to them is 15 months old.

Besides his wife. daughter and parents, he is survived by five brothers: George, John and Henry of Bellwood, Everett and Harold of Columbus and two sisters, Mrs. Ernest Birkel of Fullerton and Mrs. Peter Birkel of David City.

Funeral services were held Monday morning at St. Peter's Catholic church in Bellwood with the Rev. G. E. Messman officiating. The church choir sang for the Requiem High Mass. Burial was in the Luxemburg cemetery with Military graveside services by LaVerne Schmit Post American Legion. Pallbearers were Melvin Hiller, Wilfred Homan, Arthur Gabriel, Albert and George Koenig and Virgil Smith.

He was a member of the LaVerne Schmit post, also the V. F. W. post and Eagles lodge of Columbus and belonged to St. Peter's church.

One of the most highly respected young men of the community, his death is mourned by many. Coming from away to attend the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. John Peiffer, Jr., Rita, Rosa, Lene and Lorraine Hertz and Joseph and Leo Knockel all of Cascade, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Mike Capacius of Fremont; Mr. and Mr. A.
