William Wallace Stevens was born April 11, 1846 at Port Gibson, Claiborne County, Mississippi, the son of Eli Thompson Stevens and Susan Elizabeth Richards Stevens.
He married Cordelia Whitaker Perkins Sep 10, 1862 at the age of 16 years 4 months and 30 days. This union produced thirteen children, William Wallace, Clara Markey, Sally W., Mary Jennie, Alice C., George Bruce, Adeline Belzora, Josie Belle, Francis Marion, James Emmett, Lawrence McMartin, Dannie Adelia, and Fannie Cordelia. Cordelia died during the childbirth of their twins born January 27, 1887. Whether in grief or his inability to cope with all of the children, he left them at various relatives and it has been said that he walked into the woods and never returned. This caused much sorrow to his children throughout their lives, although some of them later lived with him at various times.
In 1890, he married Mary Elizabeth Cason Hartley. She had children from a previous marriage and their marriage produced, my grandfather, James Cully Stevens. They were living in Jefferson, Texas, when Cully (as he was known) was born. They moved to Desoto County, Louisiana before migrating to the new state of Oklahoma in 1907. He bought a farm in the Blue Community area and lived there until his death, January 20, 1921.
May he rest in peace.
