A WOULD BE SUICIDE

An eccentric individual, whose name was given us as Frederick Radinz, residing in the third ward of this city, caused considerable commotion on Main Street bridge last Saturday in attempting to commit suicide by drowning. Frederick resolutely plunged his mortal remnants into the drink and but for the timely intercession of a noble-minded sailor, who followed and brought him back upon terra firm, would have "clumb the golden pole" quicker than you can say scot. The circumstances leading to this saltus morale, it seems, bubbled up from the cauldron of his domestic relations. Frederick, we are informed, is a devoted, earnest votary of crooked pernicious influence of his God, reels home to institute a lively pandemonium about his fireside. Such was the case on Saturday last. Some members of his family, convinced that in this special case endurance had ceased to be a virtue, proceeding to swear out a peace warrant, which in order to evade, led Frederick to see rest in the "roaring canal". The kind-hearted sailor brought him out just in time to hand him over to Constable Griebling, who, in the name of the state walked him off into durance vile where he pondered until Monday morning in sweet communion with himself on the problem "whether it is nobler in the mind to bear the fangs and arrows of outrageous fortune or by taking up arms against a sea of troubles, end them all." In pondering ourselves upon his troubles, we have come to the mature conviction that kind-hearted sailors may be the victims of misplaced confidence. We hold (from a humane and Christian standpoint), that when a man drinks with an insatiable, beastly appetite, impoverishes his family, ruins his own health, abuses his wife and children, outages common decency, debases himself beyond the respect of his neighbors and still had moral courage enough left to ? Himself out of the world, no kind-hearted sailor ought to intercept him in carrying out so noble a resolve. The world would be none the worse for such a loss and a kind word upon the headstone of his grave by far more profitable, respectable and satisfactory to his fellow citizens then the drain he makes upon public funds by a continuance of his cussedness.

We have often been accused of heartlessness and perhaps some of our readers may chime in with this sentiment today. We make no claims for an overplus of philanthropy on our behalf but ask in justice that practiced utility in all things be not confounded with what some lukewarm milk and water folk style philanthropy. All living nature teems with the good and the bad. Voracious beasts of prey have no right to live, thistles must be weeded out for our gardens of useful vegetation shall thrive and crime and immorality expunged from society of true civilization is to be the goal to which mankind is to be pressed forward from generation to generation.
