James Martin, 81, Rites Held Tuesday.
Pioneer was born east of New London and spent his entire life in Community. James Martin, 81, one of the oldest native pioneers in the community passed away at Burlington Hospital Sunday morning March 20, following an illness lasting several months although he was not confined to bed.

Mr. Martin was born three miles east of New London on the Old James Martin farm [at border of Henry & Des Moines Counties].

January 31, 1884, he was united in marriage to Miss Ella [Etta] Burns, of Danville, who survives him. They had three sons; Earl died in 1898, and infant son died in 1889, and Claude died in 1920.

Mr. Martin became a member of M.E. [Methodist Episcopal] church of New London where he remained a member until his death. In 1914, Mr. and Mrs. Martin left the old Martin homestead and moved to new London where they have made their home.

For several years he had ill health although he was not confined to his home. Three weeks ago he was taken to the home of his niece, Mrs. J.S. Kupka at Burlington. Later when his condition became more serious he was taken to Burlington Hospital where he died.

Funeral Tuesday: Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the M.E. Church with the Reverend C.B. Rayhall, pastor of the church, in charge. The Masons attended the service in a body. Services at the grave in Burge [Ramsey] Cemetery was in charge of the Masons. The pallbearers, old friends and neighbors of Mr. Martin were: Elmer Wright, E.P. Hasenclever, Frank and Ray Ritchey, Louis Elliot and Date Williams.

He is survived by his widow; one sister, Mrs. Mary Hughes, Mediapolis; two brothers, Almarine Martin, La Vant Kansas; and Mathias Martin, Bernito, Montana; and nieces and friends.
