Burlington Hawk Eye, Aug 18, 1905, p.2:
"Well Known Pioneer of Des Moines County Passes Away-Ninety Years" (special to the Hawk-Eye): New London, Iowa, Aug. 17.
"Mr. James Martin, Sr. died last night at the home of his son, James Martin, Jr., in the ninetieth year of his age. Mr. Martin was one of the old settlers of Pleasant Grove Township, Des Moines County and a man well-known and highly resppected in the community. His death due to infirmities of old age. The funeral will take place tomorrow morning at 10:30 o'clock at the home of James Martin, Jr, and the internment will be at Ramsey Cemetery."
The death certificate states that James died at 89 years, 5 months and 26 days. Also, that the doctor had attended him for two months. Cause is stated as general debility for 60 days, contributory was a fracture from a fall and gangrene for 20 days.
