Resident of the Month: IVA WILLEKE
Iva Willeke has been selected by the Residents Council to be honored as our resident for the month of September.

Iva was born on a farm in a log house near Dola, April 1, 1889 to Hamilton and Anna (Neubert) Dirmeyer. The oldest of three children. She spent her adolescent years on the farm, doing the necessary farm chores assisting in clearing the land of trees and stumps, so that it could be productive to make the livelihood for the family.

Iva attended Maple Grove, a one room school, and after finishing the eighth grade, she took and passed the Boxwell Examination. Many times she has told of her adventures in going to school. Winter cold and snow, spring rains and floods, often were handicaps to reaching the school She mentioned of having to crawl fences to get through the water, when she reached the road, her skirt was almost in shreds.

Iva attended St. John's Lutheran Church and Sunday School. She became a member by Confirmation. She was active in Ladies Aide and taught Sunday School until her health made it necessary for her to retire.

On April 20, 1909, she was married to Lawrence Willeke, a neighbor boy down the road. They began housekeeping on his home place and farmed it until they retired in 1950. That year they moved back to the farm where Iva was born. They lived there until last September when her husband died. Two sons and one daughter were born to them. Richard (Virgil Richard), Kenneth, and Marguerite (Ault) all live on farms near Dola. Iva has nine grandchildren and twenty-six great grandchildren.

Iva loved gardening, much of her plot was planted in flowers. She disliked weeds and still likes to pull them. Iva was also interested in her community, sharing the many joys and also sorrows, visiting the sick and shut in's.

Iva became a resident at the Good Samaritan Home in April of this year. She is in room 202 and enjoys seeing and visiting with her family and many friends.
