Doris Besse 1900-2000
CLINTON – Doris D. Besse, 99, of Clinton, died Wednesday evening, May 24, 2000, at a Waterville hospital following a brief illness.
She was born Nov. 30, 1900, in Clinton, daughter of Wilbur and Lettie (Nelson) Dickey, (now deceased) and attended Clinton schools, graduating from Clinton High School, class of 1919, and from Colby College in Waterville, class of 1923.
She taught at Clinton High School and Waterville Junior High School for 10 years before she married Frank A. Besse in November 1933.
Mrs. Besse was a charter member of the Order of Eastern Star chapter in Clinton, Arcana Club in Clinton, and other organizations and various clubs.
She was an avid reader, enjoyed coin and stamp collecting, antiques, and flower and vegetable gardening. She especially enjoyed traveling with her husband, other family members and friends.
Her sister, Iva Holt, predeceased her.
Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Frank A. Besse, of Clinton; a son, Frank E. Besse and wife, Byrla, of Merrimack, N.H.; two grandchildren, Jill Romero, of Nashua, N.H. and Jonathan Besse and wife, Melissa, of Framingham, Mass.; and two great-grandchildren, David and Allison Romero, of Nashua, N.H.
Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 26, at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 27, with the Rev. Susan Davenport officiating. Burial will follow at Green Lawn Rest Cemetery, Clinton.
