Frank Besse 1899-2000

CLINTON – Frank A. Besse, 101, of Clinton, passed away Wednesday evening, May 31, 2000, at his home in Clinton.

He was born March 1, 1899, in Albion, son of Everett and Jessie (Rowe) Besse (now deceased), and graduated from Besse High School in Albion. He received a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Maine at Orono in 1920. After graduation from college, he was employed by his uncle, Frank L. Besse, at his tannery in Clinton until 1927. He then went to Boston as an employee of the sales division of the tanning business, Besse, Osburn, & Odell, Inc.

In 1932 he returned to Clinton to manage the tannery, which was named Besse Bros. Inc., continuing in this position as president and manager of Besse Bros. Inc. until retiring in 1968.

In 1933 he married Doris M. Dickey of Clinton; she passed away last Wednesday, May 24, 2000.

He was always active in civic affairs, being a member of the 98th Maine Legislature, an active member of the Clinton Republican Committee, a school committee member, and an original member of the Clinton Water District when the district was formed and the water and sewer system was constructed. He was an officer of the Green Lawn Rest Association and the Brown Memorial Library. On a regional basis, he was a member and past president of the Waterville Rotary Club, trustee and vice president of the Waterville Savings Bank, member and president of Associated Industries of Maine, and director and officer of the Good Will Home Association. He was a member of the American Legion and several Masonic orders.

Frank and his wife, Doris, continued to stay knowledgeable of current affairs locally and nationally right up to both of their deaths.

Three brothers, Carroll, Floyd and Harland, and two sisters, Erdine Dolloff and Arlene Buley, predeceased him.

Survivors include a son, Frank E. Besse and wife, Byrla, of Merrimack, N.H.; two grandchildren, Jill Romero, of Nashua, N.H. and Jonathan Besse and wife, Melissa, of Framingham, Mass.; and two great-grandchildren, David and Allison Romero, of Nashua, N.H., nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 2, at the Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 3, at the funeral home with the Rev. Susan Davenport officiating.
