Staff Sgt. Leonard G. Ianson, 31, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Ianson of 2922 Gilboa av., Zion, was killed May 22 on a flight over Germany in an army, bomber, his parents were informed yesterday thru the International Red Cross. He previously had been reported missing. He had been in the air forces since October, 1942, and went to England in January, 1944, as a bombardier-gunner. Before he entered the army he worked for the Oakes Products company in North Chicago. He was a brother of Lyle Ianson, 23, an army sergeant in the Southwest Pacific, and Claire, 25, a private in the Mediterranean area.

Staff Sgt. Leonard G. Ianson, 30, of 2922 Gilboa av., Zion, bomber gunner who was reported killed in action over France, is in a Nazi prison camp, his wife, Dorothy, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Ianson, learned yesterday when they received a letter which he had written from the camp June 4.

Sgt. Ianson was placed on the missing list May 22 and reported dead July 11. At the request of Mrs. Ianson, a war worker, the Waukegan Red Cross chapter agreed to seek further information of Sgt. Ianson.

Memorial services were held for him last July and a gold star was placed alongside his name in a ceremony at the honor roll in downtown Zion.

June 4, she was notified that Ianson was missing in action May 22 over France, and July 11 she received word that he had been killed May 22. Sept. 6, she received a letter which he wrote June 4, telling her he was a prisoner. Mrs. Ianson said she continued to worry, however, until his letter was verified yesterday.
