William Rasor McCormick, son of William McCormick (1797-1875) and the former Eliza Risher Matchette (1805-1850), was born on the 3rd of March 1841 in Vossburg, Mississippi. Thomas had sixteen brothers and sisters.

At the age of 19, the Civil War started and Thomas enlisted as a Private in Company H of the 27th Regiment Mississippi Infantry, knowns as the "Jasper Blues." At the Battle of Lookout Mountain, on November 24, 1863 Thomas was taken prisoner and taken to Rock Island, Illinois until October 1st 1864. On that night, Thomas escaped and headed west through Iowa to St. Louis. At St. Louis, Thomas boarded a boat for New Orleans; at Memphis, he got off and by horseback & foot head for Corinth, Mississippi. There he rejoined the army again. This was now the later part of November. Thomas was put into Captain Gallagher's company, of Col. Weir's regiment. Thomas continue with this regiment until the end of the war.

In 1870, Thomas married Nancy Narcissus Hudson, daughter of Thomas T. Hudson and the former Eliza Garner of Meridian, Mississippi. Thomas and Nannie had seven children:

Thomas worked as an insurance agent in Meridian; departing this life on the 22nd of August 1919 at the age of 78 years, 5 months and 19 days old.
