Carol Ann Barnhart passed away peacefully at age 60 on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at St. Joseph's Rehabilitation and Care Center after a brief struggle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving children when she took her final breath. Carol was born on January 3, 1952 in Mitchell, South Dakota.

Carol was adopted and raised by Hans and Anna Peterson on a farm near Utica, SD where she attended country school.

Carol married Joseph Emmett Barnhart of Wagner, SD on November 12, 1977. The couple lived in Mission Hill, SD until shortly before he passed away in 1992. Although they had little material wealth, they were rich with love, and Carol often recounted that period as the best years of her life. Within a year of losing her beloved Joe, Carol moved to Norfolk, NE for a fresh start and lived in the Norfolk area for the rest of her life.

Carol's top priorities were spoiling her loving grandchildren, children and friends; she was deeply devoted to her family. She loved playing Bingo, reading novels, watching movies and listening to music. She also loved her pets: a dog named Nika, and 2 cats named Gus and Shadow. Her friends and family remember her has strong-spirited, sometimes ornery and stubborn, often playful and fun, always supportive, and very loving and affectionate.

Carol is survived by: children: Will Kinhart and his wife, Michelle (Kinney), of Alger, WA; Bonnie Barnhart of Spearfish, SD; George Canfield of Yankton, SD; Joe Barnhart and his fiancé Dana White of Sioux Falls, SD; Dan Barnhart and his wife Danielle (Asmus) of Norfolk, Sarah (Barnhart) LeComte and her husband, Isaiah LeComte of Norfolk; Mindy Barnhart of Norfolk; Jessica Barnhart of Norfolk, 8 beautiful grandchildren, her biological brother Jerome Grasser, her biological sister Marianne Sills and her biological father Walter Grasser.

Carol was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph Emmett "Joe" Barnhart, and adoptive parents, Hans and Ann Peterson.
