NEWPORT: Luther W. Baker, 86, of Miller Township, Newport, passed away Monday, July 30, 2012 at The Manor at Perry Village. He was born June 26, 1926 in Duncannon to Ulysses Grant and Maggie Jane (Evans) Baker. He was a Navy Veteran of WW II and was retired from United Telephone. He was a member of the Pine Grove Church of God, New Bloomfield VFW #7463 and the Perry Valley Grange. He was a former member of the Newport School Board of Directors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved gardening to share with his family and community. He was a very generous and giving man.
Luther is survived by his wife, Betty Jane (Frank) Baker; son, Gerald W. Baker and wife, Joyce, of Carlisle; daughter, Kaye Miller and husband, David, of Newport; grandchildren, Gregory Baker, Jeremy Miller and wife, Karen, Benjamin Miller, Timothy Miller and fiance, Jayden, and Rebecca Magill and husband, David; great grandchildren, Lee and Lea Miller, Brady and Maxwell Miller, and Lacy Miller. He was preceded in death by brothers, Albert W. Baker, Walter M. Baker, Franklin P. Baker and his unnamed twin, James N. Baker, Wilmer K. Baker, Andrew J. Baker, Lenus G. Baker, Elmer R. Baker, Emerson W. Baker, Jessie R. Baker, Arthur R. Baker, Marlin E. Baker, and Melvin E. Baker; sisters, Minnie B. Hartzell, Myrtle E. Evans, Irene E. Cook, Elsie V. Orris, Mabel B. Frye, Vera J.Little, and Nora May Cumbler.
Family and friends are invited to services on Sunday at the David Myers Funeral Home, Newport, with a funeral service at 2 PM with Pastor Rodney Bower officiating. There is a time for visitation from 12 PM until the service. Burial will follow in the Pine Grove Cemetery with Military Honors by the New Bloomfield VFW #7463 and Newport VFW #34.
