James was the son of James McHargue (b. 1825) and Christine McHargue (b. ca. 1835 and d. bef. 1900), both from North Carolina.

He and Lucy E. Vickers married in 1900. Their children were (or included):

Bernice McHargue Brown (1904-1998),
Doris McHargue (b. ca. 1909),
Ralph Vickers McHargue (1909-1911),
T/Sgt. Magnus V. McHargue (1911-1944), and
