Magnus enlisted as a private in the U. S. Army at Fort Mcpherson in Atlanta 25 July 1942. At that time he was separated and had no dependents; he had completed three years of high school and worked as a ticket agent in the transportation industry. He served as a Technical Sergeant in the U. S. Army Air Forces, in the 753rd Bomber Squadron, 458th Bomber Group, Heavy. He is buried at Cambridge American Cemetery in Cambridge, England (Plot C, Row 6, Grave 25).
