Boyce was the son of Charles and Leah Huntley Freeman and husband of Estelle Hall. He worked for the owners of the Cleveland Lumber Company for more than 70 years. He enjoyed growing iris and peonies after his retirement. He served in the Navy as a Carpenter's Mate during World War II. He was stationed at Trinidad for 18 months during the war. He and Estelle had three daughters, Margaret, Elizabeth and Jo Ann. He had 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He also sang in the choir of First Baptist Church in Shelby for more than 40 years.
