My Aunt Jewell was my mother's (Lucile Gentry Young) sister.

She and her siblings were born to Rosaltha and William Gentry:

The Gentry sisters were a very close knit family group throughout their lives. Jewell kept in touch with family members near and far. She often drove to Lubbock to visit my Mom and Dad (her sister, Lucile and brother-in-law, Charles) the day after Christmas and then they would drive on to Clovis, New Mexico to visit for several days with their sisters, Alice "Al" and Lillie "Lil". Jewell had a great sense of humor and was such fun to be around. She always brought candy, peanuts, and all sorts of surprises. So her visits were looked forward to with much anticipation when we were children and just as much when we were grown.

Jewell chose nursing as her lifetime career. She was a registered nurse and retired from Harris Hospital Vocational Nursing School where she was an instructor for many years. Jewell was a veteran of World War II, where she served as a nurse in New Guinea (Papua Island) during the war.

Jewell had two children:
- She is survived by her daughter, Jo Harriet Smith whom she loved so very much. I remember that she called her "Bitty Shug" when she was a little girl.
- She was preceded in death by her infant son, Stephen Craig who was born on June 18, 1949 and died on June 23, 1949 in Lubbock, Texas. A very sad time in her life.

Jewell was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph D. Dewitt in 1976.

Jewell was a wonderful, loving mother and grandmother. Also a dear sweet sister and aunt. She was loved by many nieces and nephews. She had nicknames of endearment for her grandchildren and many of her nieces and nephews. Jewell had such a funny sense of humor and was a joy to be around. She will be forever loved and missed.
