Mary Ann Shannon was born to John and Mary Stambaugh Shannon on February 9, 1829 in Ohio. By 1850 the Shannon family was found in Groveland, Tazewell County, Illinois where they settled to raise their family and farm. Mary Ann married Joseph Gilman Lyford in Tazewell County on May 18, 1856. They had two sons, John and Clarence, who both died before reaching the age of 1 year.

Mary's husband was Joseph Gilman Lyford, b. July 8, 1830. He remained on his father's farm in Northfield, NH until 1853 when he removed to IL in the grain business. He married Mary A. Shannon of Groveland, IL. They had two sons, John and Clarence, who died in infancy. His second wife was Annie M. Brown. They had 4 children, and lived out west for a time in Wilton, IA and Hebron, NB. They also lived near Bridgeport, CT near their children: Jay and Fred (in the clothing business), Belle (a stenographer.) Daughter May married F.H. Smith of Quincy, MA. Joseph's mother, Sally Gilman Lyford, is buried in Northfield, NH. FAG # 136579430. His father's, Thomas Dearborn Lyford's, grave location is not known. Some time after Sally's death, Thomas moved to Tilton, NH. He married(2) Mrs. Mehitable Gerrish. He died Nov. 16, 1867.
