James Nobel Betts was the second of four children born to Silas Betts (1796-1878) and Janette Wheeler Betts (1802-1845) of East Greene, Chenango County, NY. He had two brothers and a sister, Mrs Jane E Kindsman of Binghamton, the last survivor. James received his academic education at Gilbertsville and Oxford Academy and then taught school for several years in order to save for medical school After graduating, he set up practice in Carthage NY for a short time then purchased a drug store in Syracuse and at the same time published the Syracuse Medical Journal..On December 24, 1843 he married his childhood sweetheart Sarah M Burrows (1824-1895), daughter of Jesse Burrows, Esq and Nancy Wilson Burrows of Coventry, Chenango County, NY They had three sons, all of whom became well respected member of the Pulaski community. Albert F Betts, a clothing merchant and business man of Pulaski, James H Betts, a dairyman, poultry farmer and horiculturist, living at home caring for the farming interests of his father and George W Betts who practiced medicine in partnership with his father. In 1855 Dr Betts disposed of his property and business in Syracuse and moved to Pulaski where he once again set up practice of medicine. . Dr Betts took a deep interest in the educational affairs of Pulaski serving as a member and president of the board of education for many years. He also served as President of the village for many years. He built the Betts Opera House block in 1881. He and his wife were members of the Pulaski Baptist church. His death came suddenly at midnight on March 24, 1892. Funeral services were conducted by Re J N Steelman, Rev R Paul offered the prayer and Rev L Muzzy delivered the memorial address. Burial was in Pulaski cemetery.
