Stephen Sparks was the son of Walter and Susan A. Pruett Sparks.

Father of Amanda Ellen Sparks Shaw, Robert Thomas Sparks, John Solomon Sparks, Louise Margaret Catherine Sparks Smith, and Mary Virginia Elizabeth Sparks.

Stephen enlisted in the Union Army on September 15, 1861, at Columbia, Kentucky, as a private and served for three years with Company F, 9th Regt. Kentucky Infantry. At the time of enlistment, he gave his age as 35, was 5' 9 and 12" tall, had a fair complexion, gray eyes, and black hair. His unit mustered in on December 15, 1861, at Camp Boyle, Columbia, Kentucky.

He was wounded on April 7, 1862, at the Battle of Shiloh. Captain Read later stated that he saw Stephen when he was struck. His left thigh was shattered between the knee and the hip by the first fire of the enemy. He was taken off the battlefield and placed on a boat for a hospital, but he died en-route. His body was removed from the boat and buried at an unknown point near Pittsburg, Tennessee, according to his military files. Stephen was reported missing after the 7th and presumed dead on April 15, 1862.
