Monmouth County, New Jersey Sherriff Department K-9 Patrol dog ,killed in the line of duty. Solo, the four-year-old German Shepherd worked as a patrol dog and for the K-9 tracking unit of the Monmouth County, New Jersey Sherrifs department for 2 years prior to being shot in the line of duty. In 1997 alone Solo and his handler Officer robin Eckel aided in the aprehension of 16 criminals and locating 19 missing people. His final mission was a dramatic 22 hour standoff with a fugative felon that included tear gas and vollyed gunfire none of which had any effect on the situation. After water cannons and other tactics still failed to flush out the criminal, Solo was sent in. Solo was shot by the man who surrendered shortly after the dog bravely went into the building inside the area the police had locked down for nearly a full day. Over 1,000 law enforcement officials paid their respects and over 100 K-9 officers and their handlers passed reverntly by the small white coffin that held the body of the fallen K-9 officer. The emerald Society police bagpipe band played "Amazing grace" and he was buried with full police honors.Monmouth County Sherrif Joseph W. Oxley eulogized the K-9 officer and stated, "Anyone who has ever lost a pet can begin to appreciate the pain and sorrow which is visibly evident here today, however, few citizens know how great the bond is between a police officer and their dog.Every law enforcement officer who works with a police dog is keenly aware of the unconditional loyalty of their K-9 partner, today we feel a void that cannot be filled."
