Rhode Island Colonial Governor. As a merchant in Newport, Rhode Island, he was active in the civil and military affairs of the town. He served Major for the Islands, in command of the Militia companies on Aquidneck, Connanicut, Prudence and Block Islands, (1705 to 1706, 1707 to 1710) and Colonel in command of Rhode Island Islands Militia Regiment, (1719 to 1731). He also served as deputy or an assistant, for the Speaker of the House of Deputies, (1705 to 1732). In 1732, he was elected the 20th Rhode Island Colonial Governor, serving until his death in office in 1733. His brother John Wanton succeeded him as Governor, his nephew Gideon Wanton was later Governor and his son Joseph Wanton was also Governor, but was deposed as Governor at the beginning of the American Revolutionary War.
