Edward was in Boston and was an Officer of the Guard. He witnessed the persecution of the Quakers and he became one himself. In 1660, he moved to Scituate because Plymouth Colony was a more tolerant place than the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Edward was the first teacher of the Quaker faith in Scituate, and he founded the Friends Society there.

Edward established the Wanton Shipyards on the banks of the North River.

Edward died at the age of 85 years.
