Family lore has the birth father of Mary Ann as being from the family for whom her mother Jane worked in England. Mary Ann was born in England and although there are two accounts of the marriage of Lewis Bend and Jane Sturges, both are after the birth of Mary Ann and both in the USA. Mary Ann was then raised by Lewis Bend, Sr, as his daughter. The 1900 US Census says she came to the US in 1854. One photograph of her obtained from a descendant of her youngest half-sister had writing on the back identifying Mary Ann as a half-sister of Ella, thus substantiating the story heard by descendants of a different side of the family. Lewis and Jane provided Mary Ann with 11 half-siblings.

Her youngest sister Ella married Arthur Parks, the brother of Mary Ann's son-in-law William G Parks.

When Mary Ann's daughter Sarah Matilda Wilson Parks died leaving a young family, Mary Ann's childless daughter Etta Jane Baer assumed a long-distance mothering role.

Obituary: "Mary Ann Bend Wilson -- Mary Ann Bend Wilson was born in Hacomby, Lincolnshire, England, February 3, 1853, and died at her home three miles north of Leland, October 20, 1909, just as the clock was striking the midnight hour. She was married on May 3, 1877, to Thomas T. Wilson, of Victor. Unto this union were born two daughters, Sarah Matilda, wife of William G. Parks, of Clarion, IA, and Esther Jane, who still lives at home. She leaves to mourn her loss, a loving husband, two daughters, six grandchildren, a father, four sisters and two brothers. Her mother, four sisters and one brother preceded her to the better land.
With her parents, she came to America when but a small child, locating at Batavia, and when eight years of age, she moved to Victor Township, which has been her home ever since. She has been failing in health for the past three years, but hopes for her recovery were entertained until about a week ago when she gradually weakened until the end came. She bore her suffering with patience and fortitude. She was a loving wife and mother, always thinking of others before herself, and leaves a precious memory in the minds of those who knew her.
The funeral services were held at the house Saturday, October 23rd, Dr. J. M. Lewis, of Sandwich, officiating. The interment was made in the Wesson Cemetery.
Those who attended the funeral from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. William Parks, of Clarion, IA; Mrs. Frank D. Wells, of Brewster, MN; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bend, Mrs. Ed Davis and James Bend, of Paw Paw; Mr. and Mrs. Watson, of Waterman."
