Charles W. Heywood Chilton Times May 25, 1907

With the passing away of Mr. Charles W. Heywood, who died on Thursday, May 16, Stockbridge losses another one of its old settlers, who was well known throughout the town as a hard and faithful workman down within the last year or so for in February of 1906 he had a hemorrhage and has been under the doctor's care ever since, clinging to life with a tenacity characteristic of his ancestors. The villagers always counted on it being the last time when he would appear on "the corners" and just five minutes before he died he had taken a little stroll outside and returned to the house to yield up his spirit without warning or conflict.
Deceased was born December 13, 1834, in Lester, Vermont, and was married to Miss Liza Coolidge, Nov. 23, 1861. They came west in 1865 locating at Eaton, Manitowoc County, where his uncles, Martin and Ephraim Heywood had settled, men who were pioneers of Manitowoc County. Being attracted by the east shore of Lake Winnebago they came to Stockbridge in 1867 and found the country and people so congenial that they resided here ever since. They settled in a home-like cottage on what is known as Bennett's corners, a half mile south of the village and just above the creek that winds its way to the waters of the lake.
Of late years he stopped with his son, Herbert, in the historic house known as the Thompson place, where he received kind treatment during his affliction. The union of married life was blessed by two daughters who preceded the father and mother in death while the two sons, Herbert of Stockbridge, and Alvin, of Woodstock, Ill., survive to mourn his death. Mrs. Heywood passed away Feb. 5, 1903. Deceased is also survived by two sisters, and three brothers who live in the state of New York. Mrs. W. W. Bigford a niece of the deceased living at Manawa, also attended the funeral which was held at the M. E. Church, interment being at the Brant cemetery, Rev. Beecher officiating.
