The son of John & Catharine (Shaub) Mehaffey, in 1860 he was a farm laborer living with and/or working for farmer John Zercher in Providence Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Lancaster August 5, 1862, mustered into federal service there August 11 as a private with Co. D, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 15, 1863.

He married Leah Reese and fathered Annie R. (b. 09/01/68 - lived to 101), Walter H. (b. 04/09/70), Ida M. (b. 09/14/72 - married William E. Flick), and Martin H. (b. @1873, d. 1876). His burial is listed as "destitute."
