John’s brother, Harry served in the Eighteenth Indiana Volunteers. He was captured by the Confederates and taken prisoner. While being removed to prison, he jumped off the train and was shot, but succeeded in escaping. He helped hew the logs and build the old McKendrie church, of which he was Sunday school superintendent for over forty years.
