Douglas S. Inman, 70, of Clay City, passed away July 22, 2012 at home following a battle with cancer.

Doug was born December 8, 1941, in Coal City, IN the son of Howard and Maxine (Hauser) Inman. He graduated from Coal City High School with the class of 1959 and continued his education at Indiana State Teachers College receiving a Master's degree in Elementary Education later receiving a Principal's Certificate.

Doug began his teaching career at Clay City Elementary School in 1963 with forty five 6th grade students. He left Clay City in 1969 and spent a year at Riley Elementary before being called back to become the first elementary principal at Clay City. He coached basketball and assisted in track and cross country. Students remember his smile and kind way as he cared about each student both educationally and personally. He retired in 2001 after seeing many changes to education. In 1966 he was employed for a summer with Max Pierce at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home before spending seventeen summers with Liston Buell Construction.

Doug became interested in music as a 5th grade student in Coal City Schools. Revelations, a gospel quartet, was formed during the 1970's as a result of students and teachers at Clay City practicing during the lunch hour at school. He played violin, bass violin, fiddle, mandolin, banjo, and guitar with many music groups in the area. He joined the Terre Haute Sinfonietta, playing second violin for many years. His love for music became bluegrass playing with Country Thunder, Southern Faith, Salt Cured and Grandview Junction. Many evenings were spent playing music with his father, brother and many friends at the family home. Music continued to be an important part of his life.

In 2007 he decided to share his love of music with young people and started School of Strings giving lessons to boys and girls on the violin, mandolin, guitar and bass guitar. Soon his student base included many adults in the area. Doug loved every minute teaching these students and was pleased with their progress when three students formed 6 Mile, a local bluegrass group.

Doug had begun teaching his son to play the mandolin and Bayden and Will had taken their first violin lesson. His son and family were the light of his life. Vacation time spent with the grandchildren was special and they provided many wonderful memories.

He was a member of the Clay City Lions Club, volunteering for many organizations and activities within the community. Doug enjoyed traveling with his wife and friends.

Most important to Doug was his relationship with Jesus Christ. He was a member of Faith Southern Baptist Church where he served as deacon, Sunday School teacher for many years and played the violin at the worship service.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents.

Doug leaves behind his wife of 46 years Sandra; son and daughter-in-law Todd and Marianne of Solsberry, IN; grandchildren: Brittnee James, Bayden Inman, and Will Inman; great granddaughter Lylah Nalley all of Solsberry; a brother Brad Inman and wife Sandra of Covington, La; three sisters: Janice Wallace of Florence, KY, Judy Bullock and husband Tim of Terre Haute, IN and Tessie Cashman and husband John of Coal City, IN as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members.
