...KAPKE DEATH STUNS COMMUNITY...
Pecatonica High School 1994 graduate Brian Kapke, 19, collapsed Sunday night while playing basketball in the high school gym at Blanchardville.

The son of Blanchardville residents Bob and Peg Kapke, Brian was playing for his "Ritschard Brothers" team in the Sunday night adult basketball league.

Kapke collapsed around 9:50 p.m. and efforts by emergency medical technicians failed to revive him.

Kapke was transported to the Monroe Clinic by the Blanchardville EMS.

He was active in many school activities while a student at Pecatonica and was a member of 1993-94 Pecatonica champion teams in football, basketball and track and field.

Upon high school graduation from Pecatonica, Kapke had enrolled at Madison Area Technical College.

Several members of the current Pecatonica winter teams were on hand watching Sunday night basketball when the tragedy occurred.

Due to Kapke's close friendships with many students at the school, Pecatonica school officials held staff meetings Monday and implemented its' crisis management team to deal with the situation.

A Coroner's report issued Monday revealed Kapke died from a massive heart attack. Autopsy results reportedly revealed an earlier, less extensive and undetected heart attack had likely occurred sometime earlier.
