Eastin was the only son of Walter William and Josie Winifred Trammell Nelson. He married Alison Irene Fish, Mary Vida Webb, and Nancy Harris. Children with Alison Irene Fish are Irvin Harris Nelson. Children with Nancy Harris are Carol, Deirdre, and Stephen.

Eastin's professional achievements include professor of economics at the University of Texas at Austin, acting Director of Institute for Latin American Studies at UT Austin 1958-1962, professor of economics and ad-interim Dean for the University of Panama's School of Business, technical consultant to Department of Agriculture of the Republic of Panama, Professor Extraordinario at National University of Mexico, and AID technical consultant in Brazil.

He was loved and admired by his family and his students.

He donated his body to science.
