Walter was one of three children born to Tandy James Nelson and Mary Frances Phenix.

According to census & family records, Walter was a horse rancher until about 1906 in Aspermont, Stonewall, Texas.

On the 1920 census for Freeport, his occupation is listed as Rigman On Oil Derrick which is when he worked for Texas Gulf.

In 1930 he is on the Lubbock census as a Painting Contractor which is also what his brother (James Preston Nelson) was doing in Lubbock at that time.

Walter died of bladder cancer and is buried in Houston.
