Joseph Anning and his sister Mary were early British fossilists, collectors and dealers. Mary was a paleontologist as well. Together, they found the first ichthyosaur skeleton to be correctly identified among the Jurassic marine fossil beds at Lyme Regis in Dorset, where they lived. This amazing fossil was discovered when Mary was just 12 years of age, and Joseph was 15.

Many other important discoveries followed throughout their lives.
